BACK OF THE BOOK

When you know, you know.

Eden can’t live another moment without Brady knowing that she loved him. They’ve been friends for years. She’s outlasted girlfriend after girlfriend, steadfastly by his side, believing in him when no one else did.

So tonight, the night he just won his first Golden Globe, it’s time.

The afterparty at the Beverly Hilton is in full swing as Eden stammers her way through her carefully prepared speech staring intently at his left shoulder.

He thanks her. Tells her he is very flattered.

Ten minutes later, he gets on stage…

And proposes to someone else.

With her world shattered, Eden stumbles across a novel that understands her every feeling of not fitting in. Six months later, she moves to Glasgow to begin work adapting it for the screen.

And discovers she has bitten off more than she can chew.

With the studio constantly on her back, a director determined to run rings around her and a set carpenter she can’t get off her mind, Eden is spinning plates like nobody’s business…

And then she meets Fraser.

If you like the Hollywood insider edge of Jackie Collins and the heart of Marian Keyes, you will love When I Called You Last Night, the first book in Chances Are, the explosive feminist women’s fiction series everyone is talking about!

REVIEW:

When I Called You Last Night is book one in the Chances Are series by CS Duffy.

When I started reading I thought this was just a set of stand a lone novellas but was happy to discover they are all part of a series, written to be like a soap opera, and from reading book one I can see this working very well as a concept as I found the story and characters very interesting.

Eden has traveled to Glasgow to work on The Shadow City series. leaving behind heartbreak in America she discovers she is accused of sending inappropriate messages to Brady which adds to her stress as she tries to work with a new team for the series that she at times clashes with. Will life in Glasgow be good for Eden?

BACK OF THE BOOK

The Killer left nothing behind but a rosary, a kitchen knife, and a dead man. but the dead man is a friend of Sabre Orin Brown. When his unsuspecting wife is accused of the murder, Sabre will stop at nothing to uncover the truth, even if it means unearthing chilling secrets. From a San Diego jail to the shady Chicago nightlife, Sabre’s search for the true killer forces her to face the question: What do you do when the ones you trust the most are the ones with the most to hide?

REVIEW:

The Advocates Betrayal is the second in The Advocate series and a series I very much intend to continue following 2 fantastic reads.

The story begins a few months following the end of The Advocate and we join Sabre Brown as she is rebuilding her life and home following the outcome of the previous book. She has found happiness in a new love and is continuing to do well at work. Things become difficult for Sabre again when her friend is arrested. The story has many twists as they try to find out what really happened and what secrets are being kept from Sabre and her friends.

Not only is the character of Sabre further developed throughout the story we also learn more about JP who was introduced in a smaller role in book one and he is a character that I found very interesting and I enjoyed his story just as much as Sabres.

If you like crime thrillers then this book and series is for you.

Orson the Great by Colm McElwain: A Virtual Tour Review with Love Books Tours @LoveBooksTours @KellyALacey #Ad #LBTCrew #BookTwitter #FreeReview #Gifted #FreeBookReview

Orson the Great by Colm McElwain

Genre: Children’s Fiction | Magical Realism

Ages: 9-12

BACK OF THE BOOK

From the writer of the ‘James Clyde’ book series comes a heart-warming, middle-grade story about a world-famous magician called ‘Orson the Great’

When ten-year-old Orson Whitlock is given a deck of cards by his father on Christmas Eve 1970, he falls in love with magic. This present kickstarts Orson’s meteoric rise to the top of his profession.

By Christmas 1972, Orson is an established magician and performs to audiences in some of the most prestigious theatres around the world.

His blissful life is soon turned upside down, however, when he discovers a family secret going back generations. Orson is dragged deeper into a world of secret societies, deception, strange disappearances and unrest.

Events take a further unexpected turn when a brilliant, but feared, magician known as ‘Daxton the Destroyer’ challenges Orson to a contest for the most sought-after title in magic.

Teaming up with his assistant Agatha Anderson, Orson must put his skills to the test and confront his most formidable opponent yet – or face losing everything that he holds dear.

REVIEW:

Although Orson The Great is classed as children’s fiction I found this to be a great read and would be suitable for all ages. The story is very fast-paced from the start and I found myself reading chapter after chapter with ease, firstly because of the great characters and secondly because the story was just so interesting.

Orson is a young boy who has discovered his family is part of a line of magicians. Due to his father’s illness, Orson begins to learn magic at a quick pace so he can take over as head of the magic community. During his training, he learns of Daxton The Destroyer, who seeks to lead the magic community. To stop him, not only must Orson learn magic, but he must also compete in an event against Daxton for the right to lead.

A great coming-of-age story but not everything is as it seems.

BACK OF THE BOOK

The Royal Skuas rule the seas without mercy.

Just a boy, Todd Witherow is forced to join their ranks.

However, the chain of command is threatened. The vice admiral vanishes during a raid, allowing its vile orchestrator, Commander Grenyard to take control of the mothership. Assigned to Sabre Squadron, Todd must brave the seas, survive Grenyard’s wrath, and protect his true, newfound identity.

Back home, the industrial revolution churns and a new resource, named hycinthium-lapis, has inspired evil. King Oborus must protect his reign, corrupt lords desire a revolution, and tainted Skuas seek supremacy.

Only Todd’s father, Sir Alan Witherow may prevent ruin, and see his son returned, but he is imprisoned by the same unit he once served.

Their lives, and the fate of the kingdom, lay in the hands of the legendary Sabres…

REVIEW:

Sabre packs a lot of story into 200+ pages including action and politics revolving around The Royal Skuas.

This is part one of what I believe will be a much larger story and the novel is not set up to answer many of the questions it creates, but instead to set up the characters and back story that will progress into future books. Don’t let the lack of closure put you off though as this is a great story and I found this enticing enough to make me wish for part two now.

My Perfect Family by Melanie Price

Genre: Psychological Thriller

Publisher: Wendlebury

BACK OF THE BOOK

My mother is dead. I think I killed her.

Growing up, I tried to fit into my mother, Suzannah’s, new picture-perfect family when she married Glenn. But I couldn’t compete with my new stepsister Zara with her bright blue eyes and angelic blonde curls. As soon as possible, I left to live the life of my dreams on the other side of the world. I’d wanted to start afresh. Away from all the mistakes of my past…

But now I’ve returned home to repair my burned bridges. I’d hoped maybe we could finally become the perfect family my mother always dreamed of. Instead, I wake to a nightmare.

My mother has been found dead after an accident. And I can’t remember where I was last night. But I’m covered in bruises and have hazy memories of a terrible scream… We’d had our problems, but I would never have hurt her. Would I?

When I come face to face with my stepfamily for the first time in over a year I realise once thing for certain: it wasn’t just an “accident”. Someone wanted her dead. But why, and who could have gone this far?

Whatever the answer I won’t stop until I discover the truth. Because I can’t trust a single person in this family of mine. All I know is that each of us has a secret. Every one of us is a suspect. Even me…

An absolutely gripping psychological thriller packed with jaw-dropping twists that will keep you glued to your Kindle until late into the night. Perfect for fans of Behind Closed Doors, The Perfect Marriage and anything by Gillian Flynn, Claire McGowan or Nicola Sanders.

REVIEW:

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed Melanie’s previous book I knew to expect another great psychological thriller. The story starts with Emily waking up and getting a message to say her mum is dead, but Emily is struggling to remember much from the night before and worries she may have been involved somehow.

The book introduces us to the other people in Emilys life and the question becomes what happened and who was involved.

I think Melanie writes brilliant psychological thrillers that bring twists throughout the chapters that keep you reading right to the end.

DISCOVER A GRIPPING CRIME THRILLER SET ON THE SECLUDED WELSH ISLAND OF ANGLESEY.

THE DETECTIVE
Detective Inspector Tudor Manx has spent twenty-five years working for the London Met – an experience that accounts for his cynical, sardonic nature, and the dark, puffy rings that pucker beneath his eyes. Now he’s been transferred to his native Island of Anglesey in North Wales, where, at forty-nine, he plans to wind down towards retirement. But returning home means he’ll have to confront his haunted past.

THE SETTING
The Isle of Anglesey is a North Wales beauty spot, known for its long stretches of beachfront and ancient sites. But, at the mercy of the elements, the scenery is often drained of colour. To the north, the Snowdonia mountain ranges hide under a thick roll of grey cloud. And to the south, banks of mist roll in from the Irish Sea, concealing the small islands and inlets along the coast. The Menai Strait – a long stretch of fast and unpredictable water – separates the island from the mainland.

DI Tudor Manx Series
Book 1: Anglesey Blue
Book 2: Doll Face
Book 3: Shadow Soul

Anglesey Blue

Longlisted for the Guardian’s prestigious readers’ choice award, Not the Booker Prize.

Meet DI Tudor Manx, a sardonic, sharp-witted detective with a troubled past.

Recently transferred from the London Met, Manx has returned to his native island of Anglesey, hoping for a quiet life. But his hopes are dashed when a brutally mutilated body is found nailed to the bow of a fishing boat.

The body sends shockwaves through the peaceful community. Is it a message? A warning of more murders to come?

Manx is under pressure to solve the case quickly. But his team is inexperienced, and Manx is distracted by his own troubled past. The disappearance of his sister, Miriam, still haunts him.

Can Manx solve the case before the body count rises? And how will he cope when he is forced to choose between his family and his duty as a police officer?

This atmospheric and hardboiled murder mystery is perfect for fans of Scandi and Scottish noir, and anyone who enjoys Rachel McLean, J.D. Kirk, Pauline Rowson, Elly Griffiths, Matt Brolly and Simon McCleave.

Doll House

In this hardboiled murder mystery, DI Tudor Manx leads the hunt for a brutal serial killer.

A woman has been murdered and mutilated in her own home; her liver cut out, and a message left within it.

Tasked with leading the case, DI Tudor Manx identifies several suspects, including the victim’s estranged husband. But all trails run cold.

Then, another victim dies – and from the modus operandi it seems that North Wales police are dealing with a serial killer. But who would target the inhabitants of such a peaceful island?

As the death toll increases, Manx and his colleagues must pick their way through long-forgotten history to trace the killer. But when one of them disappears, it seems that solving this crime may come at a terrible price.

This atmospheric and gritty crime novel is perfect for fans of Scandi and Scottish noir, and anyone who enjoys Rachel McLean, J.D. Kirk, Pauline Rowson, Elly Griffiths, Matt Brolly and Simon McCleave.

Shadow Soul
A quest for revenge plunges the Isle of Anglesey into a summer of fear in this gripping Welsh crime mystery.

The body of RAF Base Commander James Flynt is found dead on one of Anglesey’s popular tourist beaches. DI Manx leads the investigation, and soon discovers it’s far more sinister than he first imagined.

Meanwhile, Flight Lieutenant Bobbie Matthews is sent to Anglesey to complete trauma counselling. A grieving widow stripped of ‘combat ready’ status, Bobbie’s life spirals out of control.

She’s determined to uncover the truth about her husband’s death. But her quest sets in motion a series of events that puts the whole of Anglesey on edge – and pushes DI Manx to his limit.
