BACK OF THE BOOK

It’s official: I’m spending a full month on the ocean shores of Cape Breton.

Alone.

Avery spends most of her time hunched over a laptop, writing the kind of words that end up on website homepages and glossy brochures. But ever since “The One” turned out to be the one who smashed her heart to bits, the page has been relentlessly blank. And blank pages mean an empty bank account.

When an up-market retreat center offers Avery a major project, she jumps at the chance to pay next month’s bills. But taking the job means committing to a change of scenery to jumpstart her failing creative spark. A cottage by the sea won’t be lonely…right?

Actually, it’s anything but. Because Logan , once the only person in the world Avery could rely on, is working the front desk. And just like that, Avery’s past catches up to her. It’s too much and too wonderful all at once. Too…everything.

BACK OF THE BOOK

He took her innocence…She took his honor. But when danger unhinges their world, someone will have to fall on their sword.

The lust. The betrayal. The love. Sometimes the hardest battle…is seducing your enemy.

Alexandra wants one thing: to train with her sword, never mind the outraged public. But when the achingly handsome Monsieur Philippe kisses her, she finds herself willing to give up her heart and even her blade to be with him. That is, until she learns Philippe took another woman to bed after giving Alexandra her first kiss. Shattered and humiliated, Alexandra is done with etiquette. She’s done with skirts and ruffles. And men. Now, five years later, she’s a mercenary, known for her quick wits, expert blade, and dedication to protecting the people she guides through the uncharted forests of Provence. And if, by chance, she ever sees Philippe again, she’ll have no problem knocking that seductive smile right off his goddamned face.

Philippe never forgot the tender kiss he and Alexandra shared, and he never forgave himself for acting so badly. Years later, when he finds himself tracking a mysterious band of foes, the mercenary hired to lead him is none other than the enticing girl he unwittingly destroyed. But Alexandra is a woman now, a breathtaking and dangerous woman. Though he must balance his mounting desire for her with his duty to tame the venomous nest of criminals, Philippe soon realizes that winning Alexandra’s affection will mean he must strip his pride, lay his title on the line, and fight harder than ever before. And if dodging a few of her punches means he can maybe get another taste of her, then this adventure might be more explosive than he ever expected.

BACK OF THE BOOK:

A man reunites with his estranged father to uncover the truth about his tragic childhood …

Twenty-seven ago, eleven-year-old Callum was abducted. His body was found six months later by his older brother, Tom, near a Neolithic henge called the Shadowing Stones. It was the first in a series of events that would tear Tom’s family apart. Convinced his father was responsible for his brother’s death, Tom fled to Australia to start a new life.

Now, decades later, Tom learns that his father is dying of cancer. Knowing this may be his last chance to learn the truth, Tom returns to England. But when he crosses paths with childhood acquaintance Anna, the pair are drawn together. As Tom grows closer to both Anna and his father, he is confronted with a series of shocking twists and revelations that will change his life forever…

REVIEW:

From reading the blurb, for some reason, I was expecting a thriller novel, but what I ended up with was a much better story than I ever expected. The main ark of the story is Tom returning home to take care of his father, who is dying, and the hope of finding out what happened once and for all to his brother many years earlier. There is so much more that goes on within this book than a search for answers, though when we do get those answers, there are a few shocks.

To me, the story is about secrets and the impact they can have on people’s lives and we see that across a few relationships, but also it is a story of self-discovery and finding someone special mixed in with a deeper darker story that keeps you reading page after page to see where everything leads.

Another strong contender for my favourite book of the year.

The trail leads Grace and her team to a plush clinic nestled in Scotland’s remote wilderness. On the surface, Whiteadder House seems too good to be true, offering miracle cures and luxury comfort at no cost. But as they dig deeper, the cracks in its gleaming façade start to show.

Before long, Grace and her protégée Hannah are fighting to infiltrate Whiteadder’s inner sanctum, going undercover while racing to uncover its dark secrets. A totally gripping Scottish cozy mystery. Fans of Clare Chase, Faith Martin and Frances Evesham will love this series.

REVIEW:

Murder at Whiteadder House is the third book in the series that follows Grace McKenna and her team at The Portabello Detective Agency. This time they take on the case of Eliza Anderson who needs help finding her missing sister.

This is a brilliant cozy crime story that mixes a great crime story along with amazing characters and underlying backstories that just make you want to keep reading. I have read previous books by the author and I love the story building and the pace at which everything unfolds and although you can sometimes work out what’s going on and who’s involved, there are always some of the characters there to throw a curve ball into the mix and I can’t wait to see what the outcome is for some of these characters in book four.

My only negative came at the end. It can’t end that way and why a fireman? Just wrong, Brodie forever.

BACK OF THE BOOK

In a dying land, the armies of the dead hold sway. And those who rule them are more god than human.

James Culdaine, the last heir of the Northern Throne, was just a young man when the armies of the South murdered his parents and subjugated his lands. He has never forgotten those responsible, nor has he forgiven. He has spent the last ten years living in isolation with The Feldarra; a sacred Northern clan of fierce warriors, led by the fearless Wulfee who, still reeling from the loss of her own children, finds new meaning in protecting what only family she has left.

Now, an ancient order of warlocks has returned to the North, singing dark songs composed of blood magic that null the elements and threaten all that is living.

With nature depleted and the Southern armies returning to the North, James struggles to embrace the unique power he has long tried to repress; the ability to commune with the spirits of the dead. In the bitter heart of a growing war, with the world dying around them, James and Wulfee desperately seek answers, vengeance, and a way to save the ones they love… No matter the cost.

Fires refuse to burn. The skies are thirsty and breathless. The earth won’t eat its rot…

AUTHOR BIO

Scott Palmer was born in London, Ontario, Canada, where he lives with his wife, daughter, and two cats, and they conjure up magic (love and happiness) daily. His whole life has been a journey of collecting stories and stowing them like a library of experiences.

Growing up in Middle Earth, Kanto, and Hyrule, before moving to darker worlds like Westeros, The Circle of The World, and The Randlands provided a sturdy foundation for Scott’s imagination to grow upon. He travelled to those other worlds and walked, and fought, and bled with the people that lived there. It was somewhere in those pages that he fell in love with the art of storytelling. Since taking those first steps out of reality, Scott has immersed himself in creating his own world. A place that could transport readers somewhere they could only dream of. A place of magic, and love, forgotten lore, and long history.

BACK OF THE BOOK:

Sabre Orin Brown’s clients keep disappearing. With seemingly no connection between the cases, Sabre enlists the help of her southern PI friend, JP, and her best friend, Bob, to find each of them–before it’s too late. In her race against the clock, Sabre must determine whether contemporary horrors are being buried in the shadow of dark traditions–or if it’s something else at work. A conspiracy years in the making, secrets hidden for decades, and the twisted work of a mysterious society have all come together in the ultimate test of the strength of Sabre’s conviction.

REVIEW:

Book three of The Advocate series is a very good addition to Sabre’s story. This time round the action isn’t as closely related to Sabre’s life as the previous two books were which for me was a nice change to be able to see Sabre, JP, and Bob racing to help not just one, but a group of people.

As with the previous books, the story has a slow build-up over the first two-thirds of the book, explaining the cases the team are involved in, building clues and running down leads before picking up pace in the final third and everything coming to light. The author is very good at keeping you guessing who is involved in the criminal activities with twists occurring right to the final chapters.

I really enjoy the author’s approach to thriller novels and I love this series especially the growing bond between Sabre and JP.
