BACK OF THE BOOK:

Snowed in at an isolated stately home in the Cotswolds with an assortment of eccentric characters, is not Inspector Busby’s idea of a fun way to spend the lead up to Christmas 1923.

It soon transpires that among the house guests is someone who will stop at nothing to steal some diplomatically sensitive papers.

Can Busby find the missing papers before the villain murders Flora?

REVIEW:

Flora And Busbys First Christmas by Anna A Armstrong is a a crime mystery novella which has the name suggests is set during Christmas.

Set in the 1920’s this story follows Inspector Busby who is attending a party at a stately home in the Cotswolds and Flora Farrington who has insisted she poses as Busbys wife. Busby has been tasked to pick up sensitive diplomatic papers but they soon go missing and it becomes a race to discover who has stolen them.

I would describe this as a cosy, fun crime mystery that would be enjoyed by lovers of the genre and for those who want to give the genre a try. The chemistry between Flora and Busby is just funny from the very start especially with how uncomfortable Busby is when he is forced to work with her. The other characters within the book are from different levels of society and give a good overview of what life was like for these people during the time. It shows how people are at times treated based on their position but also from their cultural backgrounds which added an element to the book which made you feel you were in that era. As a fan of Downton Abbey I enjoyed this element greatly. I don’t know if there are other books with Flora and Busby but I would love to read them.

YOUR CALL… by David Palin

Tour Dates: 11th – 20th November

Genre: Dark Psychological Thriller

Pages: 304

Publisher: Nine Elm Books

BACK OF THE BOOK:

“…why are we – by which, of course, I mean am I – here?”

A question Paula Godwin could have, perhaps should have, asked more often as her once secure life spirals downwards almost to insanity. Little is she to know that she will discover demons other than just her own when, prompted by finding a Post-it note in a rain-sodden service station near Winchester, she makes a random telephone call.

In this taut prequel to This Changed Everything and The Armistice Killer, the enigmatic DCI Ben Logan has to unravel the confusing circumstances around a murder and potential sex scandal. But, can he balance intricate detective work with his own ambitions and complex emotions? An intriguing challenge, especially given Logan’s prosopagnosia – the inability to recognise faces. Despite this, or maybe because of this, he often sees what others miss. Choices and consequences make strange bedfellows.

Sometimes literally. Sometimes fatally…

REVIEW:

Your Call by David Palin is the prequel book to the DCI Logan Investigates series.

The story follows Paula Goodwin, a wife and successful sales person who’s life begins to spiral after she begins an affair with a stranger who’s name she doesn’t know. After finding and calling a number on a post it note her life goes into a lustful high before everything begins to fall apart around her. DCI Ben Logan is tasked to solve the mysteries of the case that has many twists before the finale.

With this being a prequel to the overall Ben Logan series I expected it to focus more on this character however it was led by Paula with Logan being more of a side character involved in the overall mystery involving Paula. This may sound like a negative but it actually worked very well for the story. Although the focus is squarely on Paula’s life and the impact her actions have on everyone involved, the story leads the reader to learn much about Ben Logan’s overall character which for me has done the great job of wanting me to read the other books to learn more about him and the kind of police detective he is. David Palin successfully makes you want to read the entire series even without the character being the main focus in this book but giving you a significant taster that makes you want more. A brilliant crime read and very surprising.

In the summer of 1920, nineteen-year-old Sarita’s younger brother, JJ, bleeds to death in her arms after being shot by Javier Salsito de Ortega, a ruthless tequila smuggler. The Texas Rangers have their hands full with Prohibition and border issues. Still, Sarita is stunned when they refuse to help.

JJ’s death devastates her father. Without a male heir, Sarita fears he will give in to the oil prospector intent on buying their family ranch, La Barroneña. Even in his despair, she knows her father yearns for justice, but he is too ill and weak to seek it.

Sarita isn’t.

Determined to prove herself and change her fate, she crosses the Rio Grande into a world of deadly threats––from rattlesnakes to Pancho Villa’s rebels, to the very killer she’s hunting. Quickly, Sarita realizes she’s stumbled into a web of danger far bigger and more sinister than she’d imagined. If she is caught, the consequences could jeopardize innocent lives and put her father’s safety at risk.

BACK OF THE BOOK:

Three teens take the journey of an afterlifetime, traveling to Hell and back, looking for meaning in great art, bakery-fresh éclairs, and, of course, their relationships with each other.

When a freak bathroom accident cuts his Earthly life short, academic bowl team captain Martin Van Assen is surprised to find himself languishing in the waiting room of the Soul Reassignment Office with only the overly dramatic Zelda Kozikowski and her maybe-ex-boyfriend, the oft-reincarnated Zeke Zabar, forcompany. The unlikely trio gets tired of sitting around with nothing to do but bicker while they wait to start new lives, and sneaks through a portal that takes them back to Earth in ghostly form. The search formeaning in their previous lives takes these three lost souls on the journey of an afterlifetime, all the way to the infernally warm intake office of Hell itself. Martin, Zelda, and Zeke might figure a few things out along the way, but none of it will matter much if they have to spend eternity in a pit of fire. Or worse.

REVIEW:

Wait For It by A. L. Glennon is a fantasy adventure novella published in November 2019.

The story follows Martin who, following an accident in a bathroom, finds himself in the waiting area of the Soul Reassignment Office where he meets Zelda and Zeke. Zeke has been reincarnated many times and he fills Martin and Zelda into what he has learnt and what is coming next for them both. Following the information from Zeke and the added boredom of waiting around, the three of them enter a portal that returns them to earth and the adventure begins.

This was a very fun read and gave me hitchhikers guide to the galaxy vibes in how it blends humour, characters bonding, and a bit of a crazy adventure. All three characters pop of the pages and the interactions are fabulous along with the potential love interests that grow throughout. The story gives rise to the question I always wonder which is how will my family move on when I am no longer here and it does so in a very interesting way building to how the characters support each other. This has been another novella that packs so much detail, and story into the pages and you really feel like you read a much larger book just by how much you become engrossed in the story and the journey the characters go on.

This will be a definite favourite with fantasy adventure lovers.

This story can be enjoyed as a standalone.

REVIEW:

The Christmas Party by Mikayla Davids is book one in the Bailey Family series. I read and reviewed book two in the series this time last year. The book is noted as being a thriller and although it has elements of a thriller I would personally put this as more a cozy crime thriller.

The story follows the Bailey Family. Erin, who hasn’t been in contact with the rest of the family in ten years, writes and invites each of them to her Christmas Party that she holds every year for family, friends, and business associates. Erin has built and incredible life for herself and is keen to reconnect with her mum, Nadia, and her sisters, Sasha and Leah. Over the course of the novel, the reader discovers more about each of the characters, what their lives are like now, what happened in the past to cause the split between them all, and all the secrets that lead to a husbands end.

The author is very good at building each of the characters stories through past and present events, and building tension around the motives for everyone involved, including husbands, that builds to the discovery of one being unalived and finally discovering who was involved. These stories are not your usual crime novels where people are trying to discover who done it, but more showing us the motives of all the characters but also how in their own ways they each, through past actions, impact on the outcomes of the present. A great story of a dysfunctional family trying to come together again while at the same time holding onto secrets, some they want revenge for, and some that explain the reasons for some of their personality traits. You know what’s coming throughout the story, the question you are asking yourself is who and why, and there is certainly no shortage of suspicion. I really enjoy how the author shows us why each of the characters are flawed and in their own way they each are good and bad in their interactions with each other. A lesson in human nature of how none of us truly are just good or evil but a blend as a result of our pasts and situations we find ourselves in.

This is a great novel for those who love character development with multiple twists and turns that make you question the motives of each of the characters as well as who is good and bad from everyone involved.

Dr Neele had hoped to leave the shadows of her past behind. For four years, she has worked tirelessly in the towering Holster Skywards research lab, which dominates Seattle’s skyline. But just before completing a groundbreaking new development, she makes a gruesome discovery that pulls her into a deadly conspiracy – one deeply tied to the sudden death of her brother sixteen years ago. As she searches for answers, she is forced to confront the painful question: Was her brother’s death really an accident?

At the same time, Simmons and Marsh, two seasoned detectives who usually work cold cases, are unexpectedly assigned a fresh investigation. In the dark, drug-ravaged streets of the Old Medical District, the murder of an elderly couple draws them into a shadowy underworld where crime and death are everywhere. With every step in their investigation, they sink deeper into a web of lies and violence that threatens to tear the city apart from within. In a metropolis whose downfall has been planned for decades, Simmons and Marsh must ask themselves: Is it their duty to fight for a dying city, or do they risk becoming part of its downfall in their attempt to stop the inevitable?
