Taken to the Hills by S J Richards

BACK OF THE BOOK

Abductions and murder are not what ex-DCI Luke Sackville expected when he left the police after tragedy struck his family.

Luke’s return to the workplace was meant to be a soft landing but when a woman vanishes after being accused of taking bribes, he is assigned a disparate team and tasked with tracking her down.

Their search becomes more urgent when her disappearance is linked to the death of a second woman. When a third goes missing the hunt becomes a race against time. Luke’s return to work presents him with the most challenging case of his career as the murder victims mount.

Murder and intrigue are peppered with humour in this fast-paced crime thriller set in and around the beautiful city of Bath in the southwest of England.

Taken to the Hills is the first in the Luke Sackville crime series. If you like a team you can root for then you’ll love this page-turner. Perfect for fans of JD Kirk, LJ Ross, JM Dalgleish and David J Gatward.

MY REVIEW

When the blurb said this book would be suitable for readers who enjoy JD Kirk books I knew this would be a one I had to read and see if it lived up to that claim. It definitely did.

The story mixes crime, great characters, developing relationships between the characters, and a good helping of humour that made this an enjoyable read. The author is firmly placed on my list to read their future books.

The story follows ex-DCI Luke Sackville who, after leaving the police following a family tragedy, chooses not to return to the police, but instead takes up a position within a company, originally planned to head their security division, is placed to lead a team investigating ethical issues.

This job soon leads him to be involved in a kidnapping and murder case where his old skills come in handy as does the support from an old colleague.

Luke is also given a team to work with and although none of them have police experience, their individual skills soon lend well to the investigation.

A very different spin on a police procedural but one that works very well and is a breath of fresh air because of this approach that I have not seen before.

Magic In Errors by Sneha Babu: A Virtual Tour Review with Love Books Tours @lovebookstours @kellyalacey #Ad #LBTCrew #Booktwitter

Magic In Errors by Sneha Babu

BACK OF THE BOOK

His world. Her world. My world. Your world. It’s all the same, yet entirely different. It’s nothing but another one of God’s oxymorons laughing at us. Some people spend their entire life waiting for an epiphany. While some live.

Sneha Babu’s debut novel Magic in Errors unravels a story showing how the Universe works in beautiful and heart-breaking ways—beginning with a neon-colored hair tie. Over the course of a few days, this seemingly insignificant accessory passes through the hands of six people; strangers, lovers, friends, and enemies. Every encounter sets off a chain reaction of events, forever altering their lives in ways they never could have imagined.

Amidst their unique struggles, a slum boy, musician, policeman, celebrity, movie agent, and businesswoman grapple with the struggle to truly live rather than merely survive. Their lives intertwine in intricate ways, as they confront devastating choices, experience powerful emotions, and endure lasting tragedies, even long after one of them murders another.

What lessons can the world teach us? Does it always pay to be kind? How could someone be connected to a person they have never met? How can a hair tie change the course of someone’s life? Find out in Magic in Errors.

MY REVIEW

“With every breath you inhale, somebody, somewhere takes their first, and with every exhale, somebody, somewhere takes their last”

I never expected a book of a little over 100 pages to have as much as an impact as this one did.

All the characters lives become entwined in one form or another and the way it is done is nothing short of fantastic. This is a hard hitting story that has twists and turns, with hard hitting moments, but mainly this book leaves you with many deep emotional thoughts.

A very strong highly recommended for me and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Determined to outwit this sorcerer of deceit, Humplepumple and his four newfound companions embark on a daring plan—a plan that involves luring the sorcerer to a sumptuous feast unlike any other. With delectable dishes and an abundance of surprises, their cunning strategy takes shape.

Humplepumple and the Sorcerer’s Feast is a delightful tale of friendship, bravery, and the enchantment of extraordinary plans. Join Humplepumple and his remarkable companions as they embark on an adventure, where wit and the power of unity are the keys to triumph. Full of twists and surprises, this whimsical journey will leave readers spellbound and hungry for more.

◆◆◆◆◆◆

This book was written with 14-year-olds in mind, but it will be equally enjoyed by adults, as the story can be interpreted on many different levels and offers warmth and humour that transcends any age group.

Like many children’s books, Humplepumple deals with the eternal struggle between good and evil, friendship and egotism, and love and hate. But unlike most other stories, the events in Humplepumple unfold for the most part in an intriguingly realistic earthly environment seen through the refreshingly naïve eyes of the Felicitens to see an honest look at our society and its decision-makers.

While this aspect of the book might elude the grasp of its younger readers, its overall educational effects certainly won’t. In this sense, Humplepumple truly combines the adage of ‘teach and delight’. Although somewhat moralizing at times, Humplepumple is genuinely innovative in its overall concept, makes a delightful read and should easily find its own niche in a book market craving new heroes.

AUTHOR BIO

When my children were young, I told them bedtime stories about Humplepumple, Mirca, the Terribly Stinking Terrifying Sorcerer and Farthog.

Some years later, when Harry Potter was published, my daughter told me that the stories I had told them reminded her of Harry Potter stories and that I should write a book. I have never read any Harry Potter books, but I think Humplepumple is more like Gulliver’s Travels.

In 2000, I travelled to Switzerland from Australia and wrote the book. Dr Beat Lehman edited and translated the book from German to English.
