The Twelve Topsy-Turvy, Very Messy Days Of Christmas by James Patterson and Tad Safron

Genre: Festive Fiction

BACK OF THE BOOK:

No stockings, no gifts, no tinsel and no tree – has Christmas been cancelled?

It’s mid-December and for the fifth year in a row, there is little sign of the festive season in the Sullivan family’s home in South London. That is until a mysterious someone starts sending strange gifts to widower Henry and his two children.

First, a small-beaked and feathered face pokes its head out from between the branches of a pear tree. Before they know it, the Sullivan’s home is full of boisterous animals and house guests, all demanding their attention.

The next twelve days turn the Sullivan family’s lives upside down in ways they never could have imagined. And even though this Christmas will be messy, it may be just the gift their family needs.

REVIEW:

The Twelve Topsy-Turvy, Very Messy Days of Christmas by James Patterson and Tad Safran is a heartwarming, festive tale that’s as touching as it is hilariously chaotic. I was pleasantly surprised to discover this lighthearted side of James Patterson’s writing.

The story begins five years after Henry became a widower. Since then, Christmas has been a no-go for him and his two children, Will and Ella. Determined to bring joy—and maybe love—back into their father’s life, the kids take matters into their own hands. Soon, a mysterious stranger begins sending peculiar and extravagant gifts, filling their home with animals, quirky houseguests, and utter mayhem.

This book was an absolute delight to read, and I’m so glad it was recommended to me. Following the structure of The Twelve Days of Christmas, it took me a moment to catch the clever nod to the song with the character name “Miss Truelove.” While the humour and absurdity kept me laughing, the story also delivered a deeply moving message about family, love, and healing. It’s about a family rediscovering not just the joy of Christmas but also their bond with one another, finding a way to move forward together after years of grief.

Of course, no festive story would be complete without a sprinkle of romance, which fits seamlessly alongside the main narrative. Coupled with the journeys of self-discovery that Henry, Will, and Ella each embark on, this book becomes something truly special.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. The perfect blend of humour, heart, and holiday magic left me thoroughly charmed. If you’re a fan of festive reads, I highly recommend adding this one to your TBR list for next Christmas—it’s one you won’t want to miss!
