BACK OF THE BOOK:

“…why are we – by which, of course, I mean am I – here?”

A question Paula Godwin could have, perhaps should have, asked more often as her once secure life spirals downwards almost to insanity. Little is she to know that she will discover demons other than just her own when, prompted by finding a Post-it note in a rain-sodden service station near Winchester, she makes a random telephone call.

In this taut prequel to This Changed Everything and The Armistice Killer, the enigmatic DCI Ben Logan has to unravel the confusing circumstances around a murder and potential sex scandal. But, can he balance intricate detective work with his own ambitions and complex emotions? An intriguing challenge, especially given Logan’s prosopagnosia – the inability to recognise faces. Despite this, or maybe because of this, he often sees what others miss. Choices and consequences make strange bedfellows.

Sometimes literally. Sometimes fatally…

REVIEW:

Your Call by David Palin is the prequel book to the DCI Logan Investigates series.

The story follows Paula Goodwin, a wife and successful sales person who’s life begins to spiral after she begins an affair with a stranger who’s name she doesn’t know. After finding and calling a number on a post it note her life goes into a lustful high before everything begins to fall apart around her. DCI Ben Logan is tasked to solve the mysteries of the case that has many twists before the finale.

With this being a prequel to the overall Ben Logan series I expected it to focus more on this character however it was led by Paula with Logan being more of a side character involved in the overall mystery involving Paula. This may sound like a negative but it actually worked very well for the story. Although the focus is squarely on Paula’s life and the impact her actions have on everyone involved, the story leads the reader to learn much about Ben Logan’s overall character which for me has done the great job of wanting me to read the other books to learn more about him and the kind of police detective he is. David Palin successfully makes you want to read the entire series even without the character being the main focus in this book but giving you a significant taster that makes you want more. A brilliant crime read and very surprising.
