REVIEW:
The Christmas Party by Mikayla Davids is book one in the Bailey Family series. I read and reviewed book two in the series this time last year. The book is noted as being a thriller and although it has elements of a thriller I would personally put this as more a cozy crime thriller.
The story follows the Bailey Family. Erin, who hasn’t been in contact with the rest of the family in ten years, writes and invites each of them to her Christmas Party that she holds every year for family, friends, and business associates. Erin has built and incredible life for herself and is keen to reconnect with her mum, Nadia, and her sisters, Sasha and Leah. Over the course of the novel, the reader discovers more about each of the characters, what their lives are like now, what happened in the past to cause the split between them all, and all the secrets that lead to a husbands end.
The author is very good at building each of the characters stories through past and present events, and building tension around the motives for everyone involved, including husbands, that builds to the discovery of one being unalived and finally discovering who was involved. These stories are not your usual crime novels where people are trying to discover who done it, but more showing us the motives of all the characters but also how in their own ways they each, through past actions, impact on the outcomes of the present. A great story of a dysfunctional family trying to come together again while at the same time holding onto secrets, some they want revenge for, and some that explain the reasons for some of their personality traits. You know what’s coming throughout the story, the question you are asking yourself is who and why, and there is certainly no shortage of suspicion. I really enjoy how the author shows us why each of the characters are flawed and in their own way they each are good and bad in their interactions with each other. A lesson in human nature of how none of us truly are just good or evil but a blend as a result of our pasts and situations we find ourselves in.
This is a great novel for those who love character development with multiple twists and turns that make you question the motives of each of the characters as well as who is good and bad from everyone involved.
