REVIEW:

The Jack O’Lantern Men by Lee Allen is a gothic horror thriller first published on 31st October 2015 and is the perfect Halloween read.

The story is written from the point of view of three individuals. The first is Frank who has been delivered to the jail to await trial for his recent crime. His daughter Laura, who has her own tale to tell about the Jack O’Lantern men, and finally the Jailer who is involved in the overall story as well. The overall story is about how the Jack O’Lantern men haunt the individuals and impact on their lives in a very mysterious and negative way. Both Frank and Lauras stories intertwine with each other, starting back earlier in their lives and leading up to the moment of Frank being jailed.

Although I’m not usually a lover of horror novels, I was intrigued by the blurb and the simple yet spooky cover design. The book does fit in the horror category but I found it more intriguing for the mysteries from trying to understand who the Jack O’Lantern men are. For a lot of the book I assumed they may just be figments of Franks imagination although we learn that others can see them as well and have had their lives impacted in a big way because of their presence. The other shock is how the stories connect with each other and the twists keep coming right to the end of the story, shocking the reader along the whole journey.

The author also tells the reader of the legend of Stingy Jack which forms the basis for the idea of the antagonist of the story. I really enjoyed learning of this legend and this story on its own is very interesting reading however tying it into the main story the author is telling us adds a great dimension to the overall book adding to its appeal and mystery.

One for horror and supernatural mystery lovers.
